Intravaginal Insemination

Intravaginal insemination is a method of insemination that is not commonly used by couples. This method uses semen that has been ejaculated by a male through masturbation or a mechanical vibrator which can then be injected into the vaginal canal of the female. Injection into the vaginal canal is done with a needless syringe, although historically a turkey baster was used. [2]

Collection of sperm must be done using a sterile pot and sperm is then transferred into a needless syringe for injection.

Successful intravaginal insemination is also based on timing of the injection. For successful fertilization of the egg to occur, sperm must be able to make its way into the uterine tubes after ovulatory event. This can be traced by either using basal metabolic temperatures or by using a fertility monitoring system. [2]

Although, this method is not typically used, couples may be candidates for intravaginal insemination if:

–          The male partner has trouble ejaculating into the female vagina

–          The female has normal ovulations

–          The male partner contains an adequate sperm count
